Flying in Malawi

Malawian Civil Aviation Authority

Postal Address: P.O. Box B311, Lilongwe, Malawi
Telephone number: +265 01770577

VISA: South African citizens must have a valid passport on arrival in Malawi. No visa is required for a stay of up to 90 days.

VACCINATIONS: WHO recommend the following vaccinations for Botswana: Hepatitis A and B; typhoid; yellow fever; meningitis; polio; measles; mumps; and rubella (MMR); Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis); chickenpox; and C19

This landlocked country is well known for its friendly, warm-hearted people, enormous Lake Malawi and the Great Rift Valley.

Fish in Lake Malawi

Lake Malawi is the third largest and second deepest lake in Africa. This jewel in the crown of Malawi is home to a thousand species of fish more than any other lake in the world. The deep crystal blue water is ideal for sailing adventures and scuba diving. A houseboat stay on the lake offers the opportunity to view game or to simply just relax with a cold drink and a braai.

When en-route over Zimbabwe to Malawi do not overfly the boot of Mozambique between Zimbabwe and Malawi, without an overflight permit from Mozambique.

Boot of Mozambique

Malawi has spectacular private game lodges like Antelope Park. Prior permission from the owner is required to land at their airfields as they are seen as Category 3 airfields.

FUEL: AVGAS is almost unobtainable in Malawi.

The country does, however, have a strong contingent of sports aircraft enthusiasts. It is possible to contact them and arrange mogas. Executive Clearance and Aviation Consultants (https://www.xclearance.co.za/) offered their assistance with the arrangements.

International airports Blantyre, Lilongwe, Makoro Islands sometimes have MOGAS available. The table below shows the supplier and contact details at each of the major airports, curtesy of Aviation Direct

Great Rift Valley, Malawi

The Great Rift Valley runs from southern Asia down to southwestern Africa, shaping the Malawian landscape to something truly spectacular. With the highest peaks over 10 000ft high and the valley itself barely above sea level, it provides some of Africa’s most varied scenery. Hiking and mountain biking trails provide an unforgettable experience.

COURTESY NOTES:

SITUATIONAL AWARENESS: Always maintain proper situational awareness of other aircraft, air spaces and terrain.

PREPARATION: A little bit of time spent before the flight, doing good research of frequencies and procedures will save you a lot of time and embarrassment.

As the holder of a SACAA pilots’ licence and associate privileges you are still bound by the SA CATS and CARs over and above the rules and regulations of the country you are operating your South African registered aircraft in.  Whichever regulation is the most restrictive applies.

FLIGHT PLANS: The permit number must be indicated in field 18 of your flight plan.

AIRMANSHIP: Always be courteous. We share the same skies.

The eye never forgets what the heart has seen.
