Welcome to the Aero Club of South Africa, South Africa's National Federation for Sport and Recreational Aviation
The Aero Club of South Africa is a composite body constituting all sectors of sport, recreational and private aviators. It is the combined force of all its sections, from power flight to gliding, ballooning to modeling.
First and foremost our primary responsibility is to our members, and this basically entails safeguarding, preserving and developing private and recreational aviation. Nobody does more to promote general aviation than the Aero Club, its sections and its members. The successes we have enjoyed are a direct result of the commitment of our section leaders, our members, and their passion for free flight!
In order to exercise our mandate, the Aero Club involves itself with a variety of committees, work groups and meetings.
Aero Club forges relationships with the Authorities in aviation such as the Civil Aviation Authority, the Air Traffic and Navigational Services Company, the South African Weather Services and the Department of Sport and Recreation.
The past year, the Aero Club again honoured its commitment to its members and indeed solidified the future of private and sport aviation in South Africa.
Highlights of 2006 includes:
- Finalisation of various regulations and rules which govern private aviation operations.
- The Introduction of the revised technical Approver Person scheme.
- Negotiations to exempt aircraft weighing less then 5000Kg from paying SAWS levies in certain instances.
- Discussions with the Deputy Director of Transport, to strengthen The Aero Club of South Africa’s image as role-player in General Aviation.
- Embarked on a promising effort to introduce a completely new set of rules for operating experimental aircraft weighing up to 600Kg.
The Aero Club of South Africa is fortunate to enjoy the support of the Civil Aviation Authority and the Air Traffic and Navigational Services Company when engaging in sport aviation competitions, events and airshows.
The Aero Club offer:
- Collective bargaining power to sections when engaging authorities on a variety of legal and technical issues.
- An Affordable third-party legal liability insurance scheme to Microlight, Gyroplane, Experimental and light aircraft.
- Professional Indemnity insurance for members.
- Representation of all sections on National and International forums and bodies.
The Aero Club pays tribute to the excellent sportsmanship of our members who represents South Africa on the International front. Every year we have at least six sections in specific disciplines traveling to International Championships and contests, and in any two year cycle we are represented in more than 12 World Cups!
We will continue to support these excellent sports men and women, and believe them to be true ambassadors of South Africa and specifically of the passion of aviation in the Southern tip of Africa.
We thank all our loyal members, with your support we are able to achieve our main goal:
“PRESERVING FREE FLIGHT!”
Safe Flying
